In its simplest form, this project is about discovery. STATION documents the ‘background music’ of our journeys. Through a seamless flow of sometimes intense, sometimes serene field recordings- from buskers to international station announcements on buses, ferries, trains and planes, as well as on foot - the audience moves through space without ever taking a step. The announcements in different languages leave the listener uncertain - as if to say, ‘I know I’m going somewhere, but I don’t understand how to get there’ (a metaphor that reaches further than mere ‘suitcase travel’). This work strives to reveal worlds beyond our predictable daily commute. This idea originated from my travels in Sarajevo in 2009 - trying to catch a train to Dubrovnik. Listening to the platform announcements in Bosnian which I couldn’t understand, I was filled with the exhilaration and utter confusion of being a foreigner. I was overwhelmed and lost, but at the same time enraptured by a sense of adventure and self-assurance that I would eventually find my way. After this experience, I started recording all of my travels around the world from Moscow to San Salvador to my home in New York City. I envision the installation traveling from parks, to train stations, to art centers around the world. Visually, the looped track will play out of old station speakers, as any station announcement would. This work will be very flexible; it can co-exist with other art projects, and events, because it plays as ambient sound. This is an abridged version. The origenal is currently 45.40 minutes long, however, that version is always evolving, as I make new recordings around the world.
